This is the time to organize your gear. Clean your gear out and clean it. Restock your fly boxes. Tie the flies you need. Practice your knots.
I also like to take the time to go to some of the fly fishing shows. At these shows, I enjoy taking the time to check out new gear. It is a good time to find what does and doesn’t work for you. These shows are great for networking. I often talk to guides and professional tyers for insights.
A great example of this was going to the Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine festival in Doswell, VA.. I had spoken to Dave, a buddy I went to guide school with, and he had recommended I stop by and see Fritz Miller. Fritz Miller is a professional fly tyer. Fritz took the time to talk with me and go over different fly tying and fishing techniques. Prior to going to the festival, I sent a text to my friend Zak, asking about striper fishing. As you may learn, I am not afraid to ask for help. When I connected with Zak, he offered to take me striper fishing. When we started fishing around 2 AM, Zak pulled out some hollow flies that were tied by Fritz.
I hooked 3, and caught 2 stripers on Fritz’ flies. It was my first time catching a striper on a fly rod. I was so proud of my accomplishment.
If you are like myself, I fish year round. You need to make sure you get the right gear, it is hard to focus on fishing if you are cold. Many anglers know that even a slight distraction can result in missed strikes. Some people choose to chase the trout stocking truck. Which is perfectly fine, but you will more than likely have company.
I enjoy fishing with others and by myself. The winter often has less people on the water, use it to your advantage. Explore new sections of water, and practice your different skills and techniques. Hopefully this helps you pass the time before you get back on the water.
